Becoming A Member

Welcome to Chapel by the Sea, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church USA. Membership is open to all who profess their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. New members bring energy, talent and diversity to our congregation, and we celebrate their decision to become part of our church family.

If you have been visiting with us, we want to invite you to become a member.

What is the process of becoming a member of Chapel by the Sea?

Begin by joining the Inquirer’s Class
Attending an Inquirer’s Class is not required, but it is a helpful way for you to find answers to questions, get to know the pastor and begin to know some other people in your church. Classes are held several times during the year.

Meet with the Session
At the conclusion of the Inquirer’s Class, you will be invited to meet with 2 to 4 members of the Session (the governing body of elders). You will be invited to respond to the Vows of Membership.

We want to get to know you
Becoming a member of our church means becoming part of our family. We will help you meet some of our members and we will help our members get to know you. We start this process by asking you to complete a form to give us some information to share in our bulletin and newsletter. We will invite you and other new members to stand during a worship service to be introduced as new members. On the day you join, someone will take your photo- graph for our “New Members” display on a bulletin board.

What do these terms have in common: Transfer, Reaffirmation, Profession of Faith & Affiliate Member?

People join our church by Transfer of Membership, Profession of Faith, Reaffirmation of Faith, or as Affiliate Members.

Transfer of Membership means you are a member of another church and that you are asking us to notify that church for you to let them know you have moved your membership to Chapel by the Sea.

Profession of Faith means you are becoming a Christian, have never been a member of a church, and will be receiving the Sacrament of Baptism.

Reaffirmation of Faith means you have been baptized, but you are no longer an active member of another congregation.

Affiliate Member means you are already a member of another congregation and you wish to continue that membership, while also joining Chapel by the Sea. If you are a seasonal resident of our community, you will probably want to join as an Affiliate Member.

Vows of Membership:

  • Do you reject evil and its power in the world, which separates you from the love of God?
  • Do you renounce sin that separates you from the love of God?
  • Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?
  • Will you seek to:
    • Pray daily,
    • Worship weekly,
    • Enjoy spiritual friendships,
    • Read and study the Scriptures,
    • Engage in service in and beyond this congregation,
    • Share the Good News of the Gospel with others, and
    • Practice generosity with time, talent and treasures?
  • If you have questions that you would like to discuss before joining, we encourage you to meet with the Pastor or to email Chapel at chapel@chapelbts.org.
